The Role of the Key Person

A key person in a daycare nursery is a designated caregiver who is responsible for building a strong, positive relationship with a small group of children and their families. They act as the main point of contact between the family and the daycare and are responsible for observing, planning and providing activities that meet the individual needs and interests of each child in their group. The key person also provides regular updates to the families about their child's development and progress and works with other staff members to ensure that all children in the daycare receive high-quality care and education.

Babies require close relationships with adults to feel safe and secure. Each baby is assigned a Key Person who ensures consistency with the baby's home routine, provides individual care during nappy changes, feedings and sleep time and creates a comfortable environment.

Our facilities include a convenient nappy changing and toileting space and children are fed either individually or in small groups in a community setting. Bottle-fed babies are typically fed one-on-one by their Key Person.

At our nursery, each child is assigned a dedicated Key Person who will be responsible for supporting them on a one-to-one basis. This person will work closely with the child and their family to understand their unique needs and interests and will use this knowledge to create a personalised care and learning plan that is tailored to their specific needs. The key person will also be responsible for observing and assessing the child's development and for providing regular updates to the family about their progress.

In addition to meeting the child's daily care needs, the key person will also work on developing their socialisation skills and supporting their journey towards independence. This may include activities such as helping the children learn to wipe their own hands after meals, or assisting them in preparing for diaper changes. By fostering a sense of independence and self-care, we aim to give children the skills they need to succeed in the future.

Your child's Key Person in the Preschool Room plays a crucial role in their learning and development. They will get to know your child's strengths, interests and needs and work closely with you to ensure your child receives the support and guidance they need to thrive. Daily small group times led by the Key Person allow every child to share their ideas and be heard, helping the Key Person understand their interests and needs. This information guides activity planning tailored to each child's individual needs and interests, maximizing their learning potential.

Regular assessments throughout the year track your child's progress and their Key Person communicates directly with you to ensure they are on track to reach their full potential.
